Hardware and
Technical Setup

I trade 'remotely' from 2 x 13.3" laptops.  The aim is to have a system that is reliable enough to trade large size, yet be able to trade from almost anywhere.

I have lost money in the past due to technical failures, so I forced myself to get into a good habit and always monitor multiple data feeds from different providers, and have backup systems ready to go.

  • A Windows server in a data centre runs Sierra Chart.  This ensures historical data is loaded quickly and any algorithms can execute as quickly as possible.  I access this server using Microsoft RDP.

  • Laptop 1 runs Trading View locally, plus the RDP Session to the data centre server running Sierra Chart.  It is connected via Wi-Fi.

  • Laptop 2 runs Trading View and R-Trader Pro (no market data).  It is connected via 4G.  It is ready to connect to the data centre via RDP in case of primary failure.

Notes

  • Laptop touchpads are not reliable.  Trying to quickly move an order on a DOM using a touchpad can be difficult and error prone.  Therefore I use a gaming mouse.  My preferred mouse for trading is a Razer Ballistic.

  • Using a laptop + 4G helps mitigate against power failure.  At home I have a UPS that powers a 4G router and I ensure the laptop batteries are in good condition.

  • When trading remotely, I use my phone's 4G hotspot as a backup.
